About Axios-Loudias-Aliakmon Delta National Park

Axios-Loudias-Aliakmon Delta National Park occupies the vast estuarine area where the Axios, Loudias, and Aliakmon rivers converge before flowing into the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Covering approximately 45,000 acres, it is among Greece’s most significant protected wetland areas, featuring freshwater marshes, reed beds, lagoons, and sand dunes. This diverse habitat supports a wide variety of flora and fauna, particularly migratory and resident birds, making it a prominent site for birdwatching at both the European and Mediterranean levels. Species such as the Dalmatian pelican, pygmy cormorant, and glossy ibis are regularly observed here.

Historically, the delta has been shaped by centuries of river sedimentation and human agricultural activity, which has influenced its landscape and ecology. Efforts to protect the park began in the late 20th century due to concerns over habitat loss and pollution. Today, the park provides numerous outdoor recreation opportunities including walking trails, boat tours, cycling routes, and photography spots. Visitors can explore elevated trails that cross the wetlands, offering panoramic views of the delta’s expansive ecosystem and its wildlife. The park is also important for educational and scientific research, with various information centers that present the natural history and conservation importance of the area. Its proximity to the city of Thessaloniki enhances accessibility while maintaining a tranquil natural environment for both locals and tourists.
